This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Despite Remarque’s flawless sarcasm and sense of humor, his books are never an easy read.

Only when reading Remarque one gets an irresistible urge to google “How to juodaiss being afraid of death? He spent his youth at war and thus did not get to ask himself all the questions young people ask themselves. There are two sides to this story. The first one tells about Ludwig’s everyday life, describes the people he meets in the most hilarious wa Despite Remarque’s flawless sarcasm and sense of humor, his juodasiis are never an easy read.

The first one tells about Ludwig’s everyday life, describes the people he meets in the most hilarious ways, but the point is that oebliskas side of the story is aimed at making the reader feel how pointless juodsais daily routines are, how insignificant it all is compared to the second side of the story.

Now this part tells one of the oddest love stories I have read about.

Juodasis obeliskas: pavėluotos jaunystės istorija

Ludwig falls for an insane woman, literally insane – she spends her days at a madhouse. The Black Obelisk is a fount of quotes and a well of irony, but then it also introduces the reader to the consequences of war by describing people who have gone mad because of it, people who no longer fit into reality.

Remarque managed juodasos get us into the atmosphere oneliskas post-WW1 Germany, he let the reader understand the birth of Nazism there, showed us that there could be no other way for these people back then. It really did seem to be the right philosophy to choose after you’ve fought for a country whose economy just collapsed and left all veterans with nothing but hatred towards all nations supposedly guilty of their despair.

I have not obleiskas many Remarque’s works, but I’d definitely suggest reading this one to everyone. It will be a slow read, a thought-provoking one, sometimes funny, sometimes depressing, but it’ll plunge you in the early s German mood for sure.

Remarque is most often known for All Quiet on the Western Front, and only that. Pbeliskas is excellent, of course, but it’s also a bit of a shame, because the rest of his stuff is still pretty good.

The Black Obelisk, a kind of sequel taking place in Germany after WWI, as the population fights merely to survive and go about their business. A thoughtful novel, but also one that flows well. Apr 09, Md. This book had very little plot, but it was still hard to put down.

Erich Maria Remarque – juodasis obeliskas – –

The writing is poetic, the philosophy is fantastic, and the characters are unique and delightful. It’s set just between the first and second world wars in Germany, and it’s beautiful. Sometimes there is a hole in me that seems to extend to the center of the earth.

What could fill it? What am I alive for? Yes, for what am I alive? Even though he may not know it. No one learns anything at all from anyone else. Everything is beginning to be a little empty and full of leave-taking and melancholy and waiting. It wants to survive. And survival is only possible through forgetfulness. Black Obelisk is a refreshing book, honest and with very good humor.

I expected a much different context. I thought this book would be more about Hitler and I was waiting for it all along, because I would definitely enjoy it in his style of writing. Hitler does make an appearance in two sentences at the end of the book. It’s ok, the book is great. I don’t understand what was in this book that caused me to the read the book in a single sitting. May be the story, time, mental situation His critique of the regime led to his books being banned and burned.

He is probably best known for “All Quiet on the Western Front” which has been assigned in many schools due to its young soldier’s perspective – as well as being a one Remarque’s shorter and easier to read books. The nation is depressed, the people conquered, staggering inflation has the value of money changing by the hour. Common items now cost millions or even billions of marks.

The German treasury just keeps printing more money trying to keep up. People burn money for warmth because it is worth less than firewood. Savvy – and often unscrupulous businessmen – ride the volatile market trying to determine if selling their goods for a certain price in the morning will lead to a loss or profit by the afternoon.

That is the setting in which our protagonist is placed. He makes his living selling tombstones and wonders if his life was meant to profit off of misery – but then again, he is only surviving, not making any profit.

In the midst of this hopelessnessa fierce re-dedication to German nationalism emerges. Suddenly the State and the military are hailed as the only ones who can save them, while our narrator, Ludwig, and a few of his close friends recognize the ambition of the government and the war is exactly what lead to the destruction of their once great country. As I read this novel in America init was quite eerie to think the events in the book were originally published in Aggressive men with bruised pride and nothing to lose, dedicate themselves the new fascist savior, Adolf Hitler.

They crave uniforms, order, definitive leadership amidst chaos.

Erichas Marija Remarkas ( of Juodasis obeliskas)

Anyone who speaks against their hailed leader is deemed a communist. Groups of young Nazi thugs, at the beginning of their formation, order people to stand for the National Anthem – and violently attack anyone who doesn’t. If I had read this book even 2 years ago I would have thought it was only a book about Germany in the late s and early 30s.

Now it seems like a prophetic warning to everyone, as the neo-Nazi movement has risen in power in Europe and the United States. We can only wonder if Remarque ever imagined it could happen again. I would say that this should be required reading, but I fear the people who need to read it the most are those least likely to do it.

Must a man be insane to enjoy the world as it is? That is one of the questions Black Obelisk lays before the reader. The time isthe place is mid-war Germany, on the brink of financial collapse. The value of the German Obeilskas rises by the thousands every day, people starve – and die.

This is one of Remarque’s late works, unusual by it’s share of humor; I found asking myself: If so, finding a pub competition about a wife that has a body so firm, that she can rip a nail out of a wall with her butt, was quite the surprise!

Another characteristic of the book is its obeliakas share of Anticlericalism and Antirationality – personified in the figures of friar Bodendiek and Dr.

Where are values like honor and love? He finds these with Isabella, and through these meetings, he touches the metaphysic fabric of life – or so it seems. Even the other characters are well drawn out and one gets the feeling that not one of them, among many, is truly an extra. Again, there are several resonating thoughts in the book – ex. People being sentimental towards the old government, for how good it was – just to find it was not, because it was the same government that had brought today’s hardships upon its citizens.

The ending is a typical Remarque – everything good, and some of the bad, comes to an end and the ending fight is a cherry on top.
