By giving this book just one star I don’t want to say that it’s not a good book.
The language is powerful and the author often shows an alnas insight into humanity. Still it’s so utterly depressing that I never want to think philippe it again. Nothing good happens throughout the whole book, everyone who seems good at heart or likeable suffers and dies in a cruel and inhuman way.
There are characters so unlikeable and unfeeling they made me sick just hearing about them. If life was like it’s descr By giving this book just one star I don’t want to say that it’s not a good book.
If life was like it’s described in this book I wouldn’t find it worth living. There was so much cruelty aljas uglyness it didn’t even touch me anymore in the end. I almost wish I’d stopped listening. View all 3 comments. Jun 24, Eduardo rated it did not like it.
De modo que su narrador la formula y la formula sin cesar, casi de modo desesperado, como si fuese un interrogador que tratase de hacerle sudar la verdad a un sospechoso testarudo. Another book club book. I have to lead the discussion on this one, which will be interesting, because I didn’t particularly like it; despite of the fact that it won a prestigious French literary award.
The main story takes place during WWI, though it is told from the perspective of a man 20 yrs. The time shifts the narrator makes throughout Another book club book. The time shifts the narrator makes throughout the book, jumping from the present to various points in the past to tell the story, were sometimes confusing, so there were times when I wasn’t sure which events happened first. Also, the book is a bit depressing, and with very few exceptions, the view I got of French people is that they are unattractive at best, revolting at worst.
One sentence in the first paragraph reads, “I have to cut open the belly of the mystery and stick my hands deep inside, even if none of that will change a thing. The story had no redeeming qualities, and I really didn’t enjoy it. This was a major disappointment after reading Claudel’s “Brodeck’s Report”. A meandering tale of three murders in a WW 1-era town, it’s told in a disjointed manner by a retired policeman who never quite seems to make sense of it all. Perhaps this was the fault of the translator, but the idioms and lingo used were more common to the 21st century than I imagine was the case in the very early 20th century.
Furthermore, the narrator’s constant self-examination and explanations of his thoughts and in This was a major disappointment after reading Claudel’s “Brodeck’s Report”.
Furthermore, the narrator’s constant self-examination and explanations of his thoughts and intent were an unnecessary distraction, and you’ll find a much better discussion of this fault of the book in the New York Times review of it. After spending eight months reading this work for my French discussion class, we came to the end and found the story was not to be resolved.
We not only did not have the final resolution of the crime, but also learned that the narrator committed a horrible crime himself many years ago.
